Welcome to Summer 2009 at Helmsley Arts Centre
Here’s another heady mix of arts, both familiar and refreshingly new. From the ever
popular Kirkbymoorside Band in The Best of British, Sunday jazz with The Mardi Gras
Band, and two productions from the 1812 Theatre Company, to the award-winning
eco-entertainment Buzzing for all ages, the beat of Japanese Taiko drums in The Way of
the Drum, and the “bittersweet comedy and beautiful music” of the Burma Play. Come
and celebrate Henry VIII’s 500th anniversary with The York Waits; and how can you
resist an eco-friendly trio called The Groanbox Boys? In a packed cinema programme
look out for Sally Potter’s gorgeous film of Virginia Woolf’s Orlando, linking with a
performance of Vita & Virginia, a play about Woolf’s relationship with Vita Sackville-West:
buy tickets for both and get a pound off the total price! In July a programme of short films,
Brief Encounters heralds the establishment of digital film-making at the Centre. And,
supplementing our busy and highly successful Youth Theatre programme, we are
delighted to welcome back Pilot Theatre Company to run a six-day Drama Summer
School for children aged 11 to 14. And much, much more….Book early and book often!
So
