Making Handmade Books Using Silk Fibres with Isobel Hall

Isobel Hall is an internationally renowned mixed media and stitch textile artist who travels to teach and exhibit.  She is in great demand worldwide and as she is based in Guisborough, North Yorkshire and southern Spain, this is a great opportunity to explore some of her unique techniques on her doorstep.   Her unique bags, handmade books, jewellery, vessels, boxes and her innovative wall art will be exhibited at HAC  throughout September.

Making cocoon stripping paper from cocoon strippings is easy and inexpensive.  Creating your own fabric to colour and embellish is an exciting process.  At this action-packed workshop we will make the paper to a required thickness and then add colour and texture using water based non-toxic paint and encaustic wax.   The inspiration will be medieval art and the resulting fabric can be used for a book cover or it can be made for wearable art such as a clutch bag or jewellery.

The workshop is suitable for beginners and also the more experienced textile artists .

The workshop will be tutor-led and students will be encouraged to work at their own pace.  It is envisaged that participants will leave with a decorated silk book cover, with the necessary information to create the pages and construct a simple book.

A list of requirements is below, and students can provide all of the items on the list or supplement the more difficult to source items with the pack provided by the tutor.

This is a multi-faceted workshop which promises to be a unique opportunity  to learn exciting new techniques that can lead to jewellery making and bag making in addition to book covers and pages.
